Origin Crew Rank Structure

The rank structure below is somewhat conjectural, since a full ranking system has never been shown in Star Trek.

Officer Ranks are known, as is the Admiralty. However, the only Non-Officer rank ever mentioned was Crewman.

FLAG OFFICERS
Fleet Admiral

Ranks of Commodore and above are considered "Flag" ranks and rarely serve in active roles aboard starships.

The rank of Commodore, as well as the rank of Fleet Captain (not shown) has fallen into disuse, though some retired officers do still hold these ranks.

Commodore's (no longer used) are addressed as Commodore's, while all Admirals, regardless of class (i.e. Vice, Rear, & Fleet) are addressed as Admiral.

Admiral
Vice-Admiral
Rear-Admiral
Rear-Admiral (Commodore)
OFFICERS
Captain Captains and Full Commanders may be addressed by their rank directly as Captain or Commander. Further, the Commanding Officer of a vessel, regardless of rank, is always referred to as Captain.
Commander
Lieutenant Commander Officers holding the rank of Lieutenant Commander, should be addressed using the rank of Commander, or if in a position of Command, Captain.
Lieutenant Officers holding the rank of Lieutenant (J.G.) or Lieutenant, should be addressed using the generic rank of Lieutenant.
Lieutenant (JG)
Ensign Female superior officers will be addressed by rank, position, sir or if previously arranged, ma'am.  Male superior  officers will be addressed by rank, position, or sir. Junior Officer's may be addressed by rank, position, or Mister.  The use of "Mister", while addressing a superior officer, is strictly forbidden.  Use of the term "Mister" in this fashion shows offense to the superior officer and may be grounds for a charge of insubordination.
WARRENT OFFICERS

NONCOMMISSIONED OFFICERS (NCO)
Master Chief Petty Officer of Starfleet Enlisted personnel are often members of Starfleet who have either chosen not to attend Starfleet Academy, have not been accepted into Starfleet Academy, or have not finished their studies at Starfleet Academy.  Though the latter is rare, the two former are very common.

The term Crewman is a generic term used to address all enlisted personnel in Starfleet. However, it is considered discourteous to use the term to apply to enlisted personnel at, or above, the rate of Chief Petty Officer.

The Master Chief Petty Officer of Starfleet is the senior enlisted person in Starfleet. He or she serves as the senior enlisted leader of the fleet, and as an advisor to Commander, Starfleet Command and the Federation President in matters dealing with enlisted personnel and their families.

Starfleet Departments

Command and Navigation
Composing most often the smallest division aboard a Starship, this department is in charge of the external operations of the Starship.

Command Officers include those assigned to the actual command of the ship (CO/XO) and their aides (Yeomen, etc.)

Navigation and Helm Officers keep track of the ship's course, as well as overall management of it's flight systems, navigation systems, and auxiliary craft.

Engineering, Operations and Security
This department is often the most prevalent on a Starship and responsible for the 'health' of the ship.

Engineers provide maintenance and repairs of ship systems, since starships are quite complex machines and need near constant attention.

Much of the ship's routine is managed by the Operations crew, such as distribution of the ship's power flow, transporting, supplies and equipment, as well as asset allocation.

Security provides safety for the crew, within and without. Tactical sensors, weapons and shield systems are under their jurisdiction. Security officers are commonly seen on away teams, as well as investigating any crimes that may happen aboard - or elsewhere, as needs be.

Science and Medical
Exploring new worlds and new civilizations can be an interesting, and sometimes, hazardous business. The Science and Medical departments are assigned aboard every Starship in varying numbers depending on mission profile.

Science Officers form possibly the most eclectic set of officer backgrounds on a Starship These officers may hold all sorts of permanent and semi-permanent positions, such as archaeologist, geologist, biologist, and so on. The ship's science laboratories are staffed mostly by this division, but may be augmented by other departments.

The crew's medical health is under the jurisdiction of it's medical staff. Depending on the vessel and level of accouterment, medical staff can consist of doctors, nurses, orderlies, counselors, or even dentists.
